harista Giles was involved in a devastating car accident this past December. She immediately lapsed into a coma after the crash, causing her loved ones and doctors to remain doubtful that she would ever be conscious again. What made Giles' story significantly more tragic is that she was five months into a pregnancy at the time of the accident.
When Giles was rushed to the emergency room, doctors had to induce the premature birth of her son. With the child weighing less than 2 pounds and his mother in a coma, the outlook didn't look positive for either patient. Luckily, a miracle was in the works for Sharista and her family.
Sharista gave birth to her little boy...while in the coma.
The emergency C-section was a success. The little boy was born and was a healthy 1-pound, 14-ounce newborn. Sharista only had a 10% chance of survival...but she woke up.
Even though Baby L — as her son is called, since Sharista was not conscious to name him — was born quite prematurely, he survived and is doing well. The infant now weighs in at around six pounds. Upon being presented with the picture, Sharista opened her eyes and began following the sight of her son.
Sharista was reported to turn her neck and head to follow the picture. After this revelation, doctors began testing her consciousness. She has since been discovered to be able to blink and squeeze fingers when asked to do so. This is certainly not bad for a woman that doctors thought to have a 2% recovery rate.
